What I appreciated most about this memoir was that the friendship between both Joans spanned four decades and proved that you can't put an age on being kindred spirits. Many of my dearest and most cherished friendships are with wonderful women not in their 30s like me—in fact, I lovingly dub them my "cool older sisters" (here's looking at you Elisa, Vanessa, Kim, and Laureen!). In conversations with each of these women over the years, they've reminded me that some stuff just isn't important—and that the stuff that is, IS. These women, in a roundabout way, are my own Old Joan (don't take offense to the descriptor, ladies). We may not take foggy beach walks or knit together, but we laugh, dine together, attend concerts, discuss books, and yes, swap stories about life and hardships, too. I leave our conversations and time spent in each other's company, no matter how brief, always uplifted. And that's what Young Joan gets out of her friendship with Old Joan—and honestly, vice versa! I can only hope I can be an uplift to my cool older sisters, too.

Come in spring and summer when the reserve is blooming with wildflowers: viper’s bugloss, cranesbill, and marsh orchid. The wildflowers and flooded quarry attract butterflies, dragonflies, and damselflies. The half-mile circular route, passing between sea and lake before circling the west side of the lake, is a delightful ramble for anyone who loves nature.

I was baffled that the story ends with them together. No woman should tolerate a man stalking at her job and her life. The fact that he had to wear her down to get her love was a gross representation of what we want for strong women in our lives. Honestly, the love story was awful all the way around. He was not worthy of her love. She should’ve walked away, filed a police report and embraced her own life.

The beach at JBR is one of the most popular place with locals and tourists. It has a lot of facilities like sunbeds, parasols, clean toilet, shower, open gym and kids play area. There are many restaurants and food stalls. The nearest shopping place Marina Mall is about 7/8 minutes walk away. The beach is very clean and on weekends it is very crowded. There aren’t many things that compare to a walk on the beach. The magical experience starts when you take off your shoes and step onto the sand. From that moment on, it’s only you and the beach. You feel the fresh, gentle sea breeze against your skin, you hear the spontaneous laughter of happy people playing in the sun, and you feel the tremble of the powerful waves crashing on the shore.
