About this deal

We've tested rice cookers from Argos, Asda, Russell Hobbs, Tefal, Yum Asia and more – to find out how much you have to spend to get perfect rice. It’s fairly intuitive to use and we like the digital timer that counts down how long you have to wait, before beeping loudly. It’s big and heavy, making it best suited to rice devotees with spacious kitchens.

If you eat rice frequently, or you enjoy different types of rice dishes, such as sushi, risottos and paella, then a rice cooker can be a great addition to your kitchen. Are rice cookers dishwasher-safe?

How much do rice cookers cost?

We assess how simple each rice cooker is to set up for the first time, how helpful the instructions are for assembling it, and the advice it gives on capacities and water-to-rice ratios. Advice on cooking times is also a plus. There are no frills to faff about with, just two settings, but a timer or some indication that cooking has finished wouldn’t go amiss.

We wanted to create a 'sensory-balanced' workspace that was both socially sustainable and adaptable' Ideal for one to three people, it has a 24-hour timer, a keep-warm function, and it can be used to cook sushi rice, as well as other foods like porridge and even cake. That said, we used the traditional one cup of rice to one cup of water method and that produced good results for both basmati and long grain rice. Brown rice needs more water – about a cup and a half to every cup of rice. We did have to try it a couple of times to get it right. There’s a 'keep warm' function but the manufacturers recommend not keeping that on for more than four hours.Another Yum Asia model, this smaller version of the Bamboo compact rice cooker has a digital timer, can make cake and porridge, and a 24-hour preset option. It's best for cooking easy-cook long white rice as it produces fluffy, light and flavourful results. One flaw is that it doesn't cook basmati rice well, though.

With a simple design of 1 button for 2 settings, this rice cooker will cook your rice and then automatically switch to its keep warm functions. If you’re cooking for just one or two, then the former might be more useful. Countertop machines are generally made to cook at least two portions, with some bigger models producing up to 10 portions. What features should I look for?

This rice cooker is simple, chic, and very easy to use. It's at its best when used for cooking traditional white long rice. You get the basic accessories and it can cook porridge and even curry. Fans of Muji's sleek kitchen kit will like it, but it's pricier than some. Clean the outer unit with a damp cloth only and avoid getting water into the electrics, plug or power cable.
