All of these adapters are compatible with Windows PCs and several also work with Linux. None of them have official drivers for macOS versions later than 10.15 (and some don't even have that), because the chipset vendors don't bother to support macOS. An enterprising independent programmer has developed macOS 11 and macOS 12 drivers for many of the adapters we've reviewed, but you should yse these at your own risk. Adapters also likely won't work with other home electronics, as they require the right drivers.

The router used is the ASUS RT-AX88U, our top gaming router. The throughput is tested at a "close" 8ft (2.4m) distance with a direct line of sight, and also at a "far" 30ft (9.1m) distance with an obstructing floor and wall in the way, as well as some metal ductwork intervening. If there's a Thunderbolt 2 port on your Mac, then it's a good choice, the adapter is from Apple itself. Note that it won't fit on a thunderbolt 3 port, they're not pin compatible. If you're thinking about to connect a wireless keyboard, bluetooth adapter or 2.4 Ghz USB WiFi dongle, then it might disappoint you. The reason discussed at the end. On linux 4.9 and above the cdc_ether driver can detect the device, but on older systems the ax88179_178a module is used instead.
