The left-hand side of the mixer offers you access to headphone volume and cue/mix knobs. Above these knobs, you’ll find the Sound Color FX options. DJs that need 4 channels should look at the Pioneer DDJ 1000 as an option. It offers full-size jogwheels. The jogwheel display helps to give you important information but it doesn’t have a dedicated screen like the RX2.I have a thing for Pioneer – no, I am not a snob. I mean I like the way Pioneer is made – I like it visually and quality wise. For example, as good as A&H and Rane’s gear is, I am not that convinced by their gear in that respect. I dunno…those LEDs on VUs are round instead of squred off and it all looks a bit like a toy. Now it is not a deal breaker how it looks or feels but let’s just say that I would prefer to have something made by Pioneer. XDJ-RX3 features a 1280×800 10.1-inch touch display and comes with GUI that you may already know from the new Pioneer CDJ-3000 players – the user interfaces are almost identical.

The Pioneer RX3 features long-throw pitch faders for accurate adjustments. The Tempo select button gives you the flexibility to adjust the increments. Great for handling a mix between large BPM jumps. Master Tempo is also present along with Beat Sync. I’m not saying USBs are better than laptops (they’re not), or that laptop DJing is far superior to DJing with just CDJs and a handful of songs (it’s not), but I will say that they are totally different experiences altogether, and there is great fun to be had with both methods 🙂 Be able to use DVS to control my MP3s on the laptop/screen built into DJ controller (while I slowly build my vinyl records library)

Once the beat FX mode is on you are able to store up to 4 customized beat FX presets in a bank that can be edited using the beat FX mixer section.

That’s exactly my intention of usage for xdi-rx: home/party/small bar use. It is great to know this unit will be absolutely fine in terms of sound quality. What do you mean that the S4 is more fun, creative and versatile than this xdj-rx? Can you please elaborate?

First impressions

The XDJ-RX3 is a clear improvement over the XDJ-RX2. A bigger screen and faster processor make it much more fun to DJ on. But it is important to see it as just what it is – a successor in a range of devices aimed at semi-pros, who maybe don’t want or need all the features of the CDJ/DJM flagship system, or indeed the XDJ-XZ (here’s our Pioneer DJ XDJ-XZ review). Overall, though, it’s a worthy improvement on its predecessor – just don’t expect it to act like a phone or tablet screen. Inputs and outputs
